The Western Australian Government is introducing a statewide container deposit scheme to help divert waste from landfill and create jobs.

From 2020, you’ll be able to get a 10-cent refund on eligible beverage containers – most plastic and glass bottles, paper-board cartons, and steel and aluminium cans between 150mL and three litres.

Beverage containers included in the scheme will carry a refund mark to identify them to consumers.

Why is the scheme important?

Beverage containers currently account for more than a third of the volume of all litter in WA. The container deposit scheme will help reduce litter, increase recycling and protect the environment.

Recycling not only generates positive environmental benefits, but it also has economic benefits. With every 10,000 tonnes of waste recycled, more than nine jobs are created – compared to around three jobs when the same amount of waste is sent to landfill.

The scheme will also give community groups, charities, sporting clubs and social enterprises a new way to raise much-needed funds.
